Asks readers to help find the most definitive moment of the decade

National news website, news.com.au today revealed the 10 defining moments and trends of the Noughties from 10 different categories as voted by its readers (http://www.news.com.au/momentofthedecade).

These moments are (in no particular order):

  • Michael Jackson’s death
  • Socceroo John Aloisi’s goal that sent Australia into the World Cup for the first time in over 20 years
  • The September 11 terrorist attacks
  • The introduction of the Apple iPod
  • The global financial crisis
  • The boom of Facebook and social networking sites
  • Heath Ledger’s iconic performance as the Joker in The Dark Knight
  • The Indian Ocean Boxing Day tsunami
  • The recognition of same sex unions by Federal law
  • The moment good Samaritans Brendan Keilar and Paul De Waard went to help a woman being assaulted in central Melbourne and were shot for doing so. Keilar was killed and De Waard, badly wounded.

Other memorable mentions include Osama Bin Laden (biggest villain of the Noughties) and the introduction of crocs (worst look of the Noughties).

Over the last six weeks, news.com.au has been polling its users to vote for the moment they found most defining in the categories of celebrity, sport, war and terror, fashion and design, money and business, technology, pop culture, disasters, sex and life and heroes and villains.

As part of the campaign, news.com.au is now asking its readers to help find the most definitive moment of the last decade from the 10 defining moments already identified.

Editor of news.com.au David Higgins said: “With the help of our readers, we have put together a list of the 10 moments by category that most defined the Noughties. We now ask that they once again re-live major moments of the last decade and vote on the most significant moment that they think the Noughties will be remembered by.

“These key moments have changed the way we live and impacted the way we will move forward. “The Noughties were very different to what we expected. The free-wheeling “Fin de Siecle” period at the end of the Nineties continued as trends came and went at an incredible speed.” Readers will also have a chance to win $2010 by naming the next decade, now known simply as The Teens.

Mr Higgins continued: “We would love to know what our readers think will be the next big thing to define our lifestyle in the next decade, and encourage them to come up with a creative name for it.”
