Missed Job Opportunities Come Down to Gender

Women still feeling inferior in workplace

Almost half (47 per cent) of females respondents to a CareerOne.com.au survey stated that they had been passed over a job opportunity/promotion because of their gender.

The survey, conducted by CareerOne.com.au through CoreData, found that women are still feeling inferior in the workplace:

  • Women are more likely than men to think that they are being treated unfairly in the workplace
  • One third of males think that they progress faster than women in the workplace
  • More than three quarters of women think that men progress faster in the workplace
  • One in 10 respondents had flirted to secure a job/project/opportunity

With International Women’s Day coming up on Sunday 8 March, Kate Southam, editor of CareerOne.com.au said gender equity remains an issue in our workplaces.

“International Women’s Day is a day about celebrating the achievements and empowerment of women. There is no doubt women have made progress since the first International Women’s in the US in 1909 but there are still major issues at work.

“Women do two-thirds of the world’s work, but still receive only 10 per cent of the world’s income. Our survey found that women still feel as if they are treated differently to men in the workplace with issues such as pay, promotions, access to senior roles, maternity leave still unresolved.

Ms Southam encouraged women to actively develop their skills around self promotion and pay negotiation so they don’t sell themselves short at work.

“While gender is still a huge issue in the workplace, it is not impossible to resolve. When I talk to men about the gender pay gap they are as mystified as women are. That gives me heart that if women just learn how to ask, they will indeed receive.

“At the end of the day, women need to be their own best advocate and career manager.”
